Hitler’s Danube Fleet revealed

Saturday September 27, 2003
After a long, dry summer the river Danube has fallen to it’s lowest level for well over a century, causing crippling economic problems: the vital shipping lifeline can no longer support it’s traffic. But the sinking level has revealed a forgotten secret: the Nazi’s Danube fleet. Scuttled during World War II as Russian troops advanced, some of the ships – including a hospital ship – still contained wounded men who were left behind. Indeed, the drop in water level is so sharp we’re not just talking about a few towers poking out of the top – almost entire ships can be seen! Local reaction has been one of quiet mourning. There are pictures here.
