Harold can sleep safely…

Monday December 15, 2003
The plans of archaeologists and the staff of All Saints church in Bosham have been quashed by the local diocese: experts wanted to excavate a tomb found in 1954 beneath the church floor in order to DNA test the remains, which they hoped were King Harold. Killed in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings, Harold is linked to Bosham by a reference in the Bayeux Tapestry. However, people who saw the bones in 1954 reported them as being from a man in his sixties – Harold would have been 44 – and DNA testers felt the liklehood of getting a sample from the remains (to be tested against the remains of Harold's known relatives) were slim. The Diocese thus declined the plan.
