More DNA action!

Monday December 15, 2003
While plans to dig up a possible English king have been blocked (see below), there are no such problems in Florence where experts will exhume fifty members of Europe's Medici family. An obscure bloodline who rose to continent spanning power – they produced three popes – the Medicis are one of the key European dynasties, and certainly the most notorious. Historians and geneticists hope to compile a definitive family tree, finally ending the legends of who exactly was related to who, as well as discovering causes of death and using 3D imaging to reproduce their faces. The work will take several years, but is aided by the opulent chapel they built to house their collective bodies. A laboratory will be set up inside the luxurious surroundings.
