France rediscovers The Great War

Given that WW1's infamous Western Front trenches occupied mostly French soil, and given that a French generation was shattered during the conflict, you would expect the events of 1914-1918 to be well known in France, if not inescapable. Yet, this is apparently not the case. Alex Duval Smith's report for the Independent newspaper discusses how a recent film has awakened a modern generation if French men and woman to a war obscured by both the Second World War, and social worries.
