Too much WW2?
Sunday February 6, 2005
The British educational establishment is under attack for placing too much emphasis on the Second World War and ignoring other important events from the nation’s past when teaching children. I’m a strong believer in children being taught about WW2 at several levels in the educational system, including in the last mandatory year. A solid grasp of those events are vital for grasping, not just the shape of the modern world, but most of modern culture, politics and discussion. Comparisons – mostly spurious - to Hitler, fascists and genocide occur daily in the media and knowledge of the period is essential to interpreting and judging them. British children do learn a lot about WW2, but I don’t think it’s too much.
