Earlier this year a book called Himmler's Secret War alleged that British Intelligence Agents murdered Henrich Himmler during the final weeks of World War 2. While there were plenty of books with crazy theories on both Himmler and WW2, Secret War was remarkable because it used documents from the British National Archive, a source of paramount importance and reputation. However, a newspaper called The Daily Telegraph became suspicious of the documents and requested they be tested...revealing them to be fakes from within the last ten years. Again, there have been plenty of faked or unreliable documents about WW2, but the presence of fakes in the National Archive, mixed among genuine documents from sixty years ago, is very concerning. Someone has deliberately smuggled them in and left them in order to pervert the historical record and until we know who, the rest of the archive must be treated with extra caution. It should be added that there's no suggestion Martin Allen, the author of Secret War, was anything other than an unwitting victim of the fraud.
