Spain Acts to Remove Symbols of Fascist Past
Saturday November 3, 2007
Spain is close to passing a law which would formally condemn the fascist regime of General Franco, created during the 1936-39 civil war. The ‘Law of Historical Memory’ also orders local governments to fund efforts to unearth mass graves and remove all monuments and signs commemorating the government.

Long overdue!
What difference it makes now it’s a old
thing of past…can’t it be a part of past as long as it does not serve as a
motivation to some one in society.
I have never been fond of the minipulation of history to meet the present political reality, whether a rewrite is more factual or not.
I would suggest that Spain annotate its fascist past with the truth rather than eliminate it. That is democratic and that is what the Spanish people and the International Brigades fought for.

Come on now, removing the sins of Franco from Spain is like removing the sins of Hitler from Germany, or those perpetrated by the US on Native Americans. It’s a sin on itself & allows a society to forget a past that should be remembered as an important lesson in history. Symbols like that should allow a society the memory to not repeat the sins of their fathers.
People who think the monuments are a thing of the past should visit the Plaza Oriente in Madrid on the Sunday before the anniv.of the death of Franco Nov 20th.Look at the names of the Civil War fascist leaders and look at the names of the leaders in the PP party.Start with Aznar and his family!
