Robert's European History BlogRussian military ends centuries old practice.Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper reported this week that the Russian military are introducing socks for all their soldiers, replacing the current system called portyanki, wrapping the feet in cloth: flannel in winter, cotton in summer. The history? This system was introduced by Tsar Peter the Great after he observed Dutch troops using them at the end of the seventeenth century.
