New Style of Holocaust Teaching
Saturday March 1, 2008
The New York Times reported this week on a new style of teaching being used to tackle the Holocaust in German schools. I was taught, at the same age as the students in the story, in the method which is apparently being rejected: a straight up description of the facts accompanied by pictures of emaciated survivors and stacks of dead bodies. It was horrific, as was the Holocaust. I had no complaints, but apparently such an approach turns many students off from the subject, leading them to reject it and not learn about it, and if there’s one thing European students need to learn, it’s about the Holocaust. The new method involves a comic book called ‘The Search’. Now I’m sure the words ‘comic book’ just elicited a groan from some readers, but the medium is more than just spandex clad superheroes and capable of dealing with many emotive and complicated issues. The article goes into more detail about how modern German children view the Holocaust and features examples of the comic.
