Hidden Bottle

Friday July 25, 2008
Sometimes it’s the simplest and lowest-key stories which raise the biggest smile. I love reports of things hidden in buildings, from priest holes to skulls to, in this case, a bottle. Builders restoring St Helen’s Church in County Durham, UK, found a small bottle while repairing the floor. The cork had collapsed, but inside was a message from another group of restorers, who had been working in 1866. After documenting the find – and a newspaper appearance – the modern restorers added a message of their own to the bottle and replaced it for future workers to find.
