Antonine Wall: World Heritage Site

Friday August 1, 2008
Hadrian’s Wall, a system of Roman fortifications which stretched from one side of Britain to the other, is among that country’s most famous landmarks. It often overshadows another British “wall”, the Antonine Wall, a series of forts and ditches built on the orders of Roman emperor Antonius Pius in 142 CE and stretching from Bo’ness to Old Kilpatrick. Now, however, the Antonine Wall has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Frontiers of the Roman Empire” section alongside Hadrian’s Wall and the German Limes and will be further protected.
