Britain’s Oldest Joke (Allegedly)
Friday August 1, 2008
A survey released this week has apparently found the world’s oldest jokes. I say apparently because the report I read said the survey was done for Britain’s “Dave” tv channel, but I couldn’t find any mention of it on Dave’s website, so I only have the information second hand. The report listed the oldest joke, which to be honest I didn’t find at all funny, but (and of relevance to here) it gave what is allegedly the oldest British joke: “What hangs at a man's thigh and wants to poke the hole that it's often poked before? A key” I assume there’s been some updating of the language. Again, I say allegedly because I don’t know anything about how they came to conclude this was the oldest “British” joke, but it’s an interesting piece of cultural history if true.

I think the merriment would have been
- in the delivery (gestures towards the thigh and facial expressions as though the answer was naughty)
- in the answers from people who were asked or their thoughts delighting them
- and in the surprise when the answer was so simple and dull
In other words ‘You would have to be there to get it.’
If you do not get this joke, you have a poor knowledge of male and female anatomy.
First of all people! If that joke is really really really old, then it would have been the first of its kind! Clever provocative especially for those days! I mean they wanted to aRrest elvis for shakin his groove thing on television! So I’m sure this joke was taboo and said only in bars and private party!
