The Antikythera Mechanism: 2,100 Year Old Astronomical Tool

Friday August 1, 2008
Given that I frequently mention stories from around the web that have interested me, it would be remiss of me not to mention something I found fascinating from the About network itself. Your Guide to archaeology has created a photo-essay on the Antikythera Mechanism, a device fished from beneath water and comprised of plates and gears. We now believe that it’s around 2,100 years old and functioned as an astronomical tool, even referring to the times between Olympic Games. The radiography image gives you a good idea of how it fits together, why not take a look.
