Storm Uncovers WW2 Bunkers

Friday August 8, 2008
During the Second World War German forces built an estimated 7000 bunkers along the Danish coast in an attempt to repel invasion. Earlier this year, in May 2008, four of these bunkers were uncovered by a violent storm after laying covered under a sand dune for over sixty years. What, you may be wondering, is so interesting about that if there’s 7000 other bunkers. Well, those recently rediscovered in Houvig were still furnished and full of the personal effects of soldiers whereas the others were emptied years ago. The discovery was important to archaeologists and they attempted to keep the extent of the discovery quiet for fear of looters plundering the site, a common problem for students of all eras. While the bunkers are now becoming something of a tourist attraction, others have argued they should be destroyed. Yahoo has a slideshow on the bunkers.
