German War Memorial in Peril
Friday September 19, 2008
As I mentioned a campaign to raise money by a British museum relating to the Second World War last week, I think it’s only right to mention a German campaign this week. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was bombed during the Second World War and has been left as a ruin to symbolise the horrors of war; it receives a million visitors a year. Unfortunately, and as you might expect given that it was a ruin, the structure needs upkeep and is now in danger of being shut. Half of the $6 million needed has been raised, but half hasn’t. Fundraising efforts have included ebay auctions to go up the tower, paintings and sponsoring a crack.

Robert, my friends and I, veterans of the US Army Field Station at Teufelsberg in Berlin Germany, this month started a camapaign to persuade Germans to have a cold war memorial on Teufelsberg. Take a look at our web page which we are using to promote the idea:

Interesting campaign, I’ll post about it in my blog on Saturday and put you in this week’s newsletter. Good luck.
