Working Spitfire Auctioned
Friday September 19, 2008
The Spitfire is the iconic British plane of the Second World War. While its precise role in the Battle of Britain – the aerial war fought between Britain and Germany for control of the skies – is still debated, the Spitfire is the plane which dominates. Last weekend, a working model, dating from the very end of the war and carefully restored, was auctioned. Even in these days of financial concern, it sold for $2.2 million.
