World War 1 "Artist"

Friday October 10, 2008
Several British news sources this week reported on the story of Leonard Smith, a Sapper with the British Royal Engineers during World War 1. He was tasked with providing detailed reports on enemy defenses, which he provided by sneaking across No Man’s Land (the gap between the trench systems) and drawing what he saw, sometimes from behind enemy lines. In doing so he had to avoid snipers, shelling and enemy troops looking out from their positions. The Telegraph has an example picture of the work he produced, as well as a fantastic (but crazy) story about a tree.
