Spanish Enigma Machines Found

Friday October 24, 2008
I love a story about people finding things, and one caught my eye this week. Historians know that Spanish General Franco used Nazi Enigma machines in his command of Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War. The machines were a commercial version, less sophisticated than the ones Germany used during World War 2, and were cracked by the British in 1937. This information was never given to Franco’s enemies, the Republicans, who never cracked the code themselves. Well, earlier this week Spanish newspaper El País reported that it had found a box of 26 of the machines tucked away, forgotten, in the headquarters of the Spanish army.
