New British WW1 Veteran "Found"
Saturday November 22, 2008
Over the last few years there has been a debate in Britain about whether the last surviving British veteran of WW1, whoever it may be, should be given a state funeral to honor all the WW1 dead. One of the arguments against was that, because of holes in official records, we don’t know for sure how many survivors there are, and one might surface after the funeral. There were three known British survivors last week but, as the argument suggested, this week a fourth was discovered. Netherwood Hughes, now 108, was conscripted and trained in 1918 having turned 18 shortly before. His life story emerged when a local paper ran an article about him turning 108 and he showed the reporter a picture of himself in uniform. Someone realized that made him only the fourth known survivor and the story spread. He has now made the national news.
