Denouncing in WW2 France

Saturday December 6, 2008
A recent conference in France broke a taboo recently by discussing the issue of denouncing in France during World War 2. Organiser and historian Laurent Joly said the conference couldn’t have been held even ten years ago, as the topic – people denouncing others to the Nazi or Vichy regimes – was still ignored in France. The study put forward that up to a million French citizens reported another, up to a quarter for “petty” reasons of personal jealousy, and only a small percentage to report Jews, the form of denouncing we most often associate with the Nazis. Examples given include a man who denounced the man his daughter wanted to marry because he disapproved, and people who denounced their lovers’ husbands.
