Medieval 'Child Bishop' Custom Revived
Saturday December 27, 2008
A medieval English tradition is being revived in Hampshire: a nine year old girl has been made a Bishop for December. The Rev Carrie Thompson explains: "In medieval times, they used to invert the whole organisation of the Church in cathedrals and parish churches from St Nicholas' Day onwards…The youngest chorister would became 'bishop', the bishop and canons of the cathedral would swap places with them, and the children were allowed to make the rules." The girl, Ophelia Wells, is also in charge of organising the Sunday service to be held on December 28th, when her time in charge comes to an end.
