Did Rap Originate in Medieval Scotland?

Saturday January 3, 2009
This is a slightly bizarre story, so I’m just going to summarise and point you to where I saw it reported: American Professor Ferenc Szasz is arguing that a Scottish tradition called flyting, where two people exchange rhyming insults, is a precursor to rap and can be traced from medieval Scotland, through Scottish slaveowners, to American slaves and on to modern rap music. The Daily Telegraph also report support for the theory from Yale Professor Willie Ruff. Please direct all heritage based complaints to the Telegraph!
