A pilot database of soldiers who fought for Britain between 1369 – 1453 (mainly in the Hundred Years War) has gone online, allowing people to search by name, rank, activity and more. The project is based on “muster rolls”, and the Independent has a nice quote explaining it from one of the leading figures on the project, Dr Adrian Bell: "The service records survive because the English exchequer had a very modern obsession with wanting to be sure that the government's money was being spent as intended. Therefore we have the remarkable survival of indentures for service detailing the forces to be raised, muster rolls showing this service and naming every soldier from duke to archer." The service is free to use, and so far I’ve found three Wilde’s, two who were part of a standing army in Scotland, and one from Aquitaine.
