"Unprecedented" Anglo-Saxon Gold Find

Saturday September 26, 2009

A metal detectorist in Britain has made the news for discovering the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found in the country. With a raw weight of 5 kilos of gold and 2.5 kilos of silver, the collection numbers over 1500 pieces and has been described as “unprecedented” (by an ITV television news report) and possibly belonged to Anglo-Saxon royalty, who ruled England from the fifth to eleventh centuries. It was dug up on private land in Staffordshire and it may take months to value each item. The finds have been declared ‘treasure trove’ by the county coroner, which means they will this be put up for sale to a museum, with the finder and owner compensated current market value, which will be millions. Leslie Webster, who led the team of professionals who took over the excavation, was quoted in the Guardian as saying that it’s "absolutely the equivalent of finding a new Lindisfarne Gospels or Book of Kells" and that is might radically “alter our perceptions of Anglo-Saxon England”.
