Henry Cole's Rat

By October 19, 2012

Britain's National Archives has put a picture of a mummified rat on their Flickr account. Perhaps not too interesting, but there is a great story: at age 15, Henry Cole started working with the official records of the British government. He was so saddened by the poor conditions the vital records were kept in that he began a campaign to reform, producing the Public Record Office (now called the National Archives.) The rat, which had a tummy full of old records, was used by Henry as evidence... and they've actually kept the rat as a record.
