An unusual and rare burial has been found in Southwell, Britain... well, it was found by archaeologists in 1959, and has just been detailed in a new report. The article I spotted this in is keen to use the term vampire, but 'dangerous dead' is more appropriate, and Southwell Archaeology explains what they were: "Throughout the Anglo-Saxon period the punishment of being buried in water-logged ground, face down, decapitated, staked or otherwise was reserved for thieves, murderers or traitors or later for those deviants who did not conform to societies rules: adulterers, disrupters of the peace, the unpious or oath breaker." The Southwell find was a skeleton with metal spikes in the ankles, shoulders and heart to hold it down. What crime this person had committed is unclear.
