England's Queen Elizabeth I knew the value of propaganda, and that included paintings. She tried to control the production of portraits to stop those she deemed offensive, and this is probably why there aren't many of her showing age. But a recently authenticated portrait has gone on display at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC (it has been on display in North Carolina for many years, but was only examined a few years ago), and it clearly shows the aging queen, complete with wrinkles, from the mid 1590s. Luckily, the Telegraph has a lovely, large version online you can look at.
