After its constituent lands had been passed between dynasties and empires for centuries, Belgium was created by a revolution in 1830. Fifteen years earlier, the Congress of Vienna - which redrew Europe after the Napoleonic Wars - had decided to reunite the Northern and Southern Netherlands, regions which had been separated over two hundred years earlier; the result was a new 'Kingdom of the Netherlands'. However, both territories had grown apart during their division, and a growing nationalist movement led to the south declaring its independence as Belgium, on October 4th 1830.
