1685: King James II of England succeeds to the throne.
1699: The death of Joseph Frederick, son of Elector George Ludwig of Bavaria and sole recognised heir to the kingdom of Spain, reopens a long dispute over the Spanish succession.
1720: The Quadruple Alliance of France, Britain, the United Netherlands and the Holy Roman Empire come to terms with Spain: the Emperor gives us a claim on Spain, while Spain gives up a claim on Italy.
1840: The Treaty of Waitangi; Britain gains sovereignty of New Zealand.
1918: The Representation of the People Act gives British women over 30 years old the vote.
