Events1598: End of an English Parliament which passed a Poor Law to deal with those in financial need; its basic laws - which include workhouses and the concept of the undeserving poor - stay in effect the nineteenth century.
1674: The Treaty of Westminster ends the Third Anglo-Dutch war with only small Dutch concessions.
1788: Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II declares war on the Ottoman Empire.
1801: The Treaty of Luneville, signed after French victories over Austria, practically replaces the Holy Roman Empire with new or re-organised republics.
1849: The Papal States are declared a Roman Republic.
