1333: Battle of Halidon Hill; King Edward III of England defeats Scotland.
1545: The Mary Rose, flagship of England's King Henry VIII, sinks on its first voyage.
1553: Queen Mary of England succeeds to the throne.
1807: The Grand Duchy of Warsaw is created.
1821: King George IV of Britain is crowned; his estranged wife is locked out of the coronation at Westminster Abbey.
1837: The Great Western, Brunel's steamship, launches from Bristol.
1870: Following their receipt of the Ems Telegram, France declares war on Prussia starting the Franco-Prussian war.
1870: The can opener is patented by William Lyman, a good fifty years after the tin can was invented.
