1530: Supporters of Zwinglian Protestantism present 'Fidei Ratio', 'The Grounds for Faith', to the Diet of Ausgberg, taking a much harder line than a previous document by Melancthon.
1608: Samuel Champlain, French explorer, founds Quebec.
1620: The Treaty of Ulm between the Holy Catholic League and the Protestant Union creates a momentary truce in the Thirty Years War.
1849: The Roman Republic ends as Pope Pius IX is restored to power by French troops.
1954: Nine years after WW2 ended, Britain is able to end all food rationing.
1996: The Swiss army's carrier pigeon units are disbanded.
