1099: The Crusader Siege of Jerusalem begins.
1494: The Treaty of Tordesillas is produced as Spain and Portugal haggle over who controls the 'New World'. A dividing line is set up on the longitude of 370 leagues west of Cape Verde; Spain gets everything west, Portugal everything east.
1520: The Field of Gold Cloth meeting begins between Kings Henry VIII of England and Francois I of France; the sumptuous gathering lasts three weeks.
1523: Gustavus Vasa completes his campaign of Swedish liberation from Denmark by taking Stockholm; he is elected King Gustavus I of Sweden.
1546: The Peace of Ardes ends the war between England, Scotland and France.
1848: Paul Gauguin, French painter, born.
1905: Norway declares independence from Sweden.
