1088: Pope Urban II begins his rule.
1578: A coup in Scotland puts 12 year old King James VI on the throne.
1689: Having been forcibly abdicated by the English Parliament, former King James II lands in Ireland with a French force.
1797: The Bank of England introduces Britain's pound note.
1854: Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire form an alliance against Russia; the Crimean War begins between these sides later in the year.
1994: The Church of England first ordains female priests.

1685: George Berkeley, Bishop, scientist and philosopher.
1824: Gustav Kirchhoff, German physicist.
1832: Charles Boycott, British manager of Irish estates who caused so much opposition he gave his name to the 'boycott'.
1863: Gabriele D'Annunzio, Italian writer and military adventurer.
1890: Vaslav Nijinsky, Russian ballet dancer.
