1569: The Battle of Jarnac; the Huguenot Prince de Conde is killed in the French Wars of Religion.
1781: Uranus is discovered by Sir William Herschel of Britain, although it is originally named Georgium Sidus after the king of England.
1793: The royalist Vendee region of France revolts against the revolution.
1813: Briton William Hedley patents 'Puffing Billy', a steam engine that uses friction to move along rails (as opposed to teeth and grooves).
1938 The Anschluss of Austria and Germany is achieved by the latter invading the former.

1733: Joseph Priestley, English scientist; discovered oxygen.
1741: Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II.
1860: Hugo Wolf, Austrian composer.
1900: Georges Seferis, Greek writer and diplomat.

1711: Nicolas Boileau Despredeaux, French poet.
1870: Charles Forbes-Rene, French politician and historian.
1881: Tsar Alexander II of Russia.
