1458: In a novel attempt to unite the English nobility's warring Yorkist and Lancastrian factions, King Henry VI of England orders a 'Loveday'. It has no effect.
1719: Spain recognises James Stuart, 'The Old Pretender' as the true King of England.
1815: The Fifth Coalition against Napoleon is formed by Austria, Britain, Prussia and Russia.
1957: The Treaty of Rome establishes the EEC: European Economic Community.
1807: Britain abolishes the slave trade.
