732: The battle named both The Battle of Tours and The Battle of Poitiers: Charles 'the Hammer' Martel defeats the Moors.
1399: England's Order of the Bath established.
1440: Eton College is founded by Henry VI to take 50 of the poor.
1521: King Henry VIII is awarded the title 'Defender of the Faith' by Pope Leo X; Henry later splits the English church entirely from the Papacy.
1797: The Battle of Camperdown; an English fleet defeats the Dutch.
1832: Marshall Soult, one of Napoleon's commanders, becomes Prime Minister of France.
1899: The Anglo-Boer war begins.
1982: The remains of Henry VIII's flagship Mary Rose are first raised.
