Guide Review - The History of the Franks by Gregory of Tours
This translation, by Lewis Thorpe, has become the standard for students since it was first published in 1974. Although Thorpe's work isn't entirely reliable - some passages are poorly translated, and occasional sentences omitted - his version is vibrant, humorous and can easily stand alone as a good read (although it may not be true to what Gregory originally wrote). Anyone wishing to base higher level work on the Histories will need to consult the Latin original, and most readers will turn to another source for both context, and a slightly clearer account of events: Gregory's structure can take some time to digest. Thorpe's introduction certainly contains his own interpretations, and is best used for just the basic facts.
