The English Civil War
Between 1642 and 1651 England was riven by a protracted civil war between, on one side, King Charles I and his supporters (the Cavaliers) and, on the other, parliamentarians (the Roundheads). The war resulted in the execution of the King and the creation of first a Commonwealth and then a 'Protectorate' under Oliver Cromwell.
