Top 5 Best PC Games - Other

By Robert Wilde, About.com

Not every game can be categorized, and not every genre has produced enough good quality games to merit their own list. The following products are all enjoyable, but something of a rarity in their field.

1. Commandos: Strike Force

The Commandos series of World War Two themed puzzlers is pushed in a new direction with 'Strike Force'. Gone is the, often beautiful, overhead view and in comes a first person viewpoint, out goes most of the team (only the Green Beret, Spy and Sniper remain) and in comes a different type of tension. Fortunately much of the strategy is present and correct.

2. Silent Hunter III

Both a simulation and a mild RPG, this game lets you live out your Das Boot fantasies/nightmares by pitching you, a German U-boat commander, against the Allied navy. Deep, gripping and generally regarded as the best simulation, let alone submarine simulation, ever. Not for the trigger happy...

3. Patrician III

When I started playing on the C64 years ago, trading games were popular, but apparently not anymore; nevertheless, Patrician III is proving popular. You play a small merchant in a fourteenth century northern European town who has to trade his way to fame and fortune, while struggling with truculent foreign cities, demanding locals and the temptations of crime. The game isn’t as violent as the others on this list, but fans of the trading game should enjoy it.

4. Commandos 2

Sumptuous graphics conceal some devious gameplay in this mix between of tactics and puzzle solving. The setting is, as with so much in modern pc gaming, secret operations in World War 2, as you control a group of commandos who use stealth instead of brawn. However, this isn’t a fast game to play as thought, planning and long sessions of thinking are required to safely complete each mission.

5. Corsair Gold

Play privateers from various European nations as you roam the seas in search of treasure and adventure... The game is one of the oldest here, with relatively simple gameplay and dated graphics, but the fun factor remains high and almost any age group can get involved. You don’t make complex economic decisions or spend two hours building an elite unit, you just get stuck into some light-hearted piracy (although there are still strategic aspects). The Gold package offers over fifty missions.
