General Sites on UK History

General - multi-era or subject - sites on British history.
BBC History
Although the BBC's excellent history site isn't devoted to British History, well over 50% of the content relates to Britain. Scattered through the various categories (science, war, people, multimedia, kids etc.) is some of the web's best material, with interactive games and displays, biographies, articles, interviews...just about everything.
Britannia.com
I could give a summary of Britannia.com, but their own one is so perfect! "The internet's most comprehensive treatment of the Times, Places, Events and People of British History. Edited by David Nash Ford, the department features narrative histories of England, Wales, Scotland and London, timelines, biographies, glossaries, bibliographies, historical documents and much more."
Encyclopaedia of British History
Schoolnet's superb encyclopaedia provides short, informative entries, pictures and sources for a large number of categories and subjects, all designed to be read and understood by children. My only criticism would be the lack of an A-Z index (you have to work your way through sub-categories), which I find rather limiting. On the plus side, children can easily find associated material.
From dot to doomsday
Stephen Murray's marvellous mixture of narrative, sources and insight is a model of how popular history could – and should – be written. Detailed, but simple enough for mass use, with translated texts blended seamlessly in, only the very dark colours count against the friendliness and access of this site: I just wish it carried on beyond 1087 AD!
Pictures of England
Compiling a massive online collection of photographs detailing England's historic buildings is a brilliant idea, the perfect supplement for plain text history books. The standard of pictures is high; however, the site is dependant on volunteers taking the shots and writing the buildings up, so you might not find what you’re looking for.
