Some sites specialise in a single aspect of World War 1 - planes or poets - while others grow into multi-faceted behemoths complete with animated maps and sound files. This list is devoted to the latter and, while they-re not all gigantic, they all cover a range of Great War subject matter.
BBC Online
This smartly designed site contains a massive range of material, including summaries, pictures, first-hand accounts, animations, newspaper covers, articles and much more. To use a buzz-word of the late 1990's, this is a multi-media extravaganza.
Eighty Years After
Created by the BBC's news department, this site has some similarities to the BBC's main site on the Great War (a Best of the Net winner listed above), but it's also far simpler, with a greater reliance on text and diagrams rather than animations and 3D models; you'll find a range of summaries, short articles and primary source-material.
Encyclopaedia of the First World War
Although written for children and of limited depth, Schoolnet's 'Encyclopaedia of the First World War' will be useful to newer readers on the topic.
International Relations 1900-1939
The BBC's Bitesize revisions guides break history down into easily readable chunks and their course on International Relations contains a lot of First World War material. Suitable for younger readers.
Trenches on the Web
Subtitled 'An Internet History of the Great War', this is a massive online resource with maps, biographies, chronologies, quotations and more. Excellently designed, clearly written, and worth your time. My link will take you to the index page.
