Mir

Definition: Mir is a name for the traditional Russian village community which dominated peasant life before collectivization. By 1914, they were deeply old fashioned – some commentators prefer ‘backward’ - worried about government interference and prone to revolt. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution they were targeted by the Soviets and life convulsed.
