Definition: The enragés were a faction of Parisian militants prominent in 1793, who advocated extreme measures such as execution to solve economic problems like hoarding. They were led by Roux, Varlet and Leclerc, and their ideas were taken up by the Montagnard government, although this latter group remained deeply suspicious of the enragés and their methods and worked to close them down. In 1790-1 the term had been used to describe the Jacobins by their enemies.
