Legislative Assembly

Definition: When the National Assembly, the body of French Estates General representatives whose creation is held to have started the French Revolution, disbanded in 1791, it was replaced by a new constitution and elections to a new representative body: the Legislative Assembly. This lasted until 1792, when a crisis over what to do about the monarchy led the Assembly to be replaced by a National Convention, which declared a Republic.
