Definition: Chelmsford is the capital town of the English county of Essex. It is known as the “birthplace of radio” because it was home to the first factory devoted to wireless telegraphy, which opened in 1899 and was operated by Marconi’s ‘Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company’. Employment at Marconi’s works helped boost the local population and economy.
