Definition: London Tower, also known as the Tower of London, is a castle and tourist landmark in London, England. Built on the site of Roman fortifications, the Tower of London is actually a defensive complex full of towers and buildings. The titular London Tower is the ‘White Tower’, a massive structure which dominates the rest. The tower complex dates from shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066, and has seen several monarchs shelter behind its defences. When castles fell out of favour the Tower became used as a base for artillery, and when this use also stopped the Tower was reinvented as a tourist attraction. Over two million people now visit it every year.
