Thomas Savery c.1650 – 1715

By

In 1698 Thomas Savery invented the first British steam pump with his ‘engine to raise water by fire’. Unfortunately it wasn’t strong enough for mine work (it was only used in one) as intended, and Savery’s patent is considered to have held back steam development by years. His role at the beginning of the industrial revolution is largely negligible.
