Definition: In 1903 the Russian Social Democratic Party split into two groups; the more radical minority became called Bolsheviks (which actually means 'members of the majority'). Lenin led this party to power in the 1917 October Revolution.
To counter the growing unrest, Bolshevik newspapers and printers were shut down and leading members arrested.
