The Swiss confederation originated in 1291, when three cantons formed a protective union. This group expanded throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, establishing there modern constitution in 1848.
This is a short history of the city of Geneva, home of the United Nations, which is located in south-west Switzerland.
Created by T. F. Mills, the site contains information and illustrations on all of the Swiss flags, including mercenary bands and cantons, as well as a detailed history of the Swiss national flag.
This site by Klaus Augustiny has a brief timeline and history, and an excellent map of the confederation between 1536 – 1798. However, the page doesn’t live up to its subtitle: “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Swiss History, But Were Afraid to Ask”.
Although brief, this page comprehensively explains the famous Swiss Guard. Created out of fiercely independent mercenaries, this force has guarded the Pope for over four hundred years, and only Swiss citizens can join.
